The president has ordered his lawyers to stop defending the federal law that bans recognition of same-sex marriage. The reasoning for this is because of many reasons. There has been a long history of discrimination against gays and the Defense of Marriage act doesn't meet the standard of scrutiny.
An attorney and the president "have concluded that classifications based on sexual orientation warrant heightened scrutiny and that, as applied to same-sex couples legally married under state law, Section 3 of the act is unconstitutional." Many gay couples have been very hurt and troubled by this act. Obama is now defending the constitution and not letting gays be discriminated anymore.
