Time Magazine had a poll about the FCC and if they were pleased with the content showed on TV. 53 percent of the respondents said that they think the FCC should place stricter controls on broadcast-channel shows depicting sex and violence. 68 percent are convinced the entertainment industry has "lost touch" with viewers' moral standards. 66 percent said there is too much violence onTV and in movies, and 58 percent said too much cursing. More than half of the people in the survey said that sex on TV shows and movies influences kids to have sex when they are too young. 50% of teens age 15 to 19 are already sexually active and the teen pregnancy rate in the U.S. is twice than that of any other industrialized nation.
But in Europe they accept sex a lot more and shun violence more. Especially in their movies. France, Germany, and the Netherlands have an unwritten social contract with youth: “We’ll respect your right to act responsibly and give you the tools you need to avoid unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.” The United States’ teen pregnancy rate is over 6 times that of the Netherlands, almost 4 times that of Germany, and almost 3 times that of France.STDs like gonorrhea is the second most commonly reported infectious disease in the United States, and U.S. adolescent rate is almost 33 times greater than the reported teen rates the Netherlands. If we can reduce teen birth rates to equal that of France, Germany or the Netherlands, it would save significantly on public funds expended each year to support families begun by a teen birth.
.Are we influenced greatly by what is on TV such as sex, violence, and defiance or is it just the different cultures?I think there should be better access to birth control, better knowledge about teen pregnancy, and maybe some respect for ourselves.
